It hardly seems possible. Summer was here with all its heat, and then fall rushed through. Now the temperature is on its downward journey and getting out of bed, well- it’s chilly. Time to get the fireplace stoked for some cool nights. But if you are like most fireplace owners, your fireplace and chimney hasn’t been cleaned since last year. So what do you need to do to safely enjoy those cool evenings with the special people in your life?

First give us a call at The Fire Place and we’ll get you scheduled for cleaning as soon as possible. Also if you need any repairs from last summer’s storms, we can fix the problems and keep your family safe. The Fire Place can put you on the calendar for spring so come next fall, you’ll be ready to fire up the fireplace right away. We’ll drop you a postcard and a phone call so you can have your chimney cleaned at your convenience.

Now some of you are do it yourselfers and that’s fine. It’s a messy look, but go for it. Grab a flashlight and shine it up your chimney. The safest plan is to clean the chimney if there is more than 1/8″ of creosote/soot on the inside walls. Once you’ve finshed checking the inside, grab a ladder and take a look at the outside. Start at the ground level (if your chimney is exposed). Look for cracks or signs or water damage. Lots of times the motar (filling between the bricks) gets crumbly and starts breaking away. Over time water can get in and cause more damage. If you see cracks or openings, then call us. We can handle the repairs when the job is too big to handle on your own.

Change the batteries on your smoke detector as well as your carbon monoxide detector. So many people fail to have a carbon monoxide detector and when we snug up our houses for winter, and use fireplaces the chances of problems increase. For the cost of a run through McDonalds or the movies, you can be safe not sorry. I always have a hard time during the holidays when I read about children who die because of carbon monoxide poisoning. Again a word to the wise.

If you have a gas fireplace, make sure we or the professional you get to inspect your gas fireplace checks your fireplace thoroughly. This means checking gaskets on the doors or face of the fireplace. A close inspection of the glass for cracks or breaks is in order as well. If glass needs to be replaced, make sure it is the proper glass for your gas fireplace. You want a good tight fit and seal. Burners need to be checked for wear as do the logs and then cleaned. Drafting needs to be checked and the flame appearance. Have the person inspecting check for gas leaks as well. All connections need to be checked and tested. You need to know wires are intact and properly connected.

The inspection is lots of little steps but it makes the difference between safe operation of your gas fireplace and a fire or worse. The flue will be open after your inspection so you’re good to start your first lighting of the season. Enjoy the warmth, romance and cozy feeling you get with your fireplace.

2009 Tax Credit Information – Important New Details

On February 17, 2009 President Obama signed into law, H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) and the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) succeeded in getting included in that critical legislation a tax credit for the purchase of a biomass-burning stove to help consumers fight rising home heating costs.

The tax credit is a 30% tax credit of up to $1500 total over a two year period (2009-2010) for the purchase of a 75% efficient biomass-burning appliance. (The “$1500 over two-years” is new!) The tax credit provisions are extended improvements on the legislation that passed in October 2008. The major changes are: 1) an extension of the credit to include 2010; 2) the increase on the credit from $300 to 30% of the total cost; and 3) the lower heating value (LHV) will be used for the efficiency rating rather than the higher heating value (HHV)

In a letter to the IRS in February 2009, the HPBA asked the IRS to issue specific guidance on a number of issues on the tax credit. On June 1, 2009, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued its guidance for this consumer tax credit. While not addressing many of the specific issues raised by the HPBA, this minimal guidance should be sufficient. We understand that the IRS is not expected to issue any further guidance on this tax credit, although HPBA staff will continue to ask for clarifications as needed.

For the complete article go to HPBA Issues & Legislation

The Xtrordiniar 864 is square inches of expansive glass that lets you enjoy the massive display of flames. The 864 HH (Home Heater) produces more heat for colder climates and heats larger spaces. It will heat up to 2,250 sq. ft. It can be vented to two additional heat zones for a fast transfer of heat to those areas. The 864 HH provides gentle, consistent heat with the award-winning Ember-Fyre™ burner.
